Green finger lime belongs to Citrus australasica, an Australian citrus with small leaves, thorny branches and distinctive finger-shaped fruit. Microcitrus australasica is a commonly encountered synonym.

The fruit develops a dark green rind, sometimes with brownish tones. Inside are the characteristic separate juice vesicles popularly called citrus caviar.
